Published by Amsterdam Publishers in the Netherlands, a niche publishing house that only prints Holocaust memoir and some fiction, this biographical fiction is based on the early life of Moris Albahari, a Sephardic Jew in the former Yugoslavia during World War II . Moris's harrowing story takes him from the small city of Drvar, Bosnia, escaping transport to a Croatian death camp, and to joining Tito’s Partisans where he must survive the onslaught of the Nazis and their collaborators.
The pain of Moris’s traversing his adolescence where he must navigate the trauma of war, particularly with his newly discovered understanding that Jews, Serbs, and Romani are being targeted for genocide by Hitler’s “final solution.” As a Partisan, Moris hides his Jewish identity fearing reprisals from some of his comrades. This adds another layer to the many challenges he faces. During his journey he has only a few trusted friends in his fighting unit. He relies on them for validation that he’ll be alright, but he learns that one must be willing to die for the cause of liberation. This is a very frightening concept for a boy to absorb . As a courier and photographer, he is often in great danger. All the while, he doesn’t know if his family is alive.
His is a story of loneliness, grief, heartache, inner conflict, and ultimately the jagged edges of resilience. Moris’s traumatic wartime experiences will touch you with its heart- wrenching saga during the most heinous event in human history. This in a region where little is written about the Holocaust,, in a place with a rich culture amidst its own long-standing history of conflict,
